Governments meeting to discuss responses to global crime waves are urging countries to impose strict penalties for the trafficking wildlife products like elephant ivory and rhino horn. Members of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Friday passed a resolution encouraging UN member states “to make illicit trafficking in wild fauna and flora a serious crime” and to ensure organized criminal groups are prosecuted.
Under UN rules, serious crimes should receive sentences of up to four years in prison or more. In many instances wildlife smugglers are released after paying fines significantly lower than the value of the illegal goods.
“Today the commissioners took a critical step forward by recognizing the serious, transnational and organized nature of wildlife and forest crime. These crimes are not only putting the survival of endangered species in peril, but are also threatening security and sustainable economic development,” said Wendy Elliott, leader of WWF’s campaign against wildlife crime. “We urge governments worldwide to use every tool available to combat these crimes, which are also taking human lives.”
WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGES NOT APPROPRIATE FOR CHILDREN

During the crime commission meeting, governments identified links between the illegal trade in wildlife and timber products and other transnational organized crimes such as drug and arms running, human trafficking, money laundering and terrorism. The wildlife trafficking resolution was put forward by the United States and Peru.
Yury Fedotov, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, told journalists, "Wildlife and forest crimes must be treated as serious crimes with minimum punishments of four years or more so that full force of deterrence can be used against criminals. The harder task, however, will be to curb the demand."
The poaching of elephants and rhinos has reached record levels across Africa, but increased law enforcement effectiveness is also needed throughout the trade chain and in consumer countries like China, Thailand and Viet Nam.
Up to 30,000 elephants are killed each year for their ivory tusks. In poaching epicentre Central Africa, governments will meet next week to address the ongoing security crisis, which is exacerbated by the proliferation of heavily-armed poachers.
“We are seeing that the killing of wildlife is increasingly connected to horrific violence against the rangers and community-members standing between these criminals and their targets. It is long overdue for the punishments to fit the crimes in these cases,” Elliott said.
Governments also agreed to a proposal from Norway to address crimes at sea that impact upon the environment, including fisheries crimes. Illegal fishing undermines efforts by governments and responsible fishers to sustainably manage fisheries. It also threatens livelihoods, food security and sustainable development, and costs the global economy US $23 billion annually.

John Denver Tribute Links Musicians from Various Genres, Generations

Fifteen years after his death in a small plane crash and more than 40 years after his first hit, John Denver’s songs are getting a new lease on life. “The Music Is You,” is a new tribute that brings musicians from various genres and generations together to re-imagine Denver’s biggest hits.
The musicians include southern rockers My Morning Jacket, who cover “Leaving On A Jet Plane.” The 10-piece alternative band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros reinterprets “Wooden Indian.” And multi-Grammy winning singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams delivers a soulful take on “This Old Guitar.” Williams says she was determined to make the song her own.
“You know, you don’t want to do a John Denver song and sound like John Denver. I mean, you want to show that ‘Wow, look how this song can be done,” she said.“You know, the more I got into it, I was really moved. I was actually moved to tears a little ... you can hear that in the song.”
Unlike some tribute discs, “The Music Is You” was not produced to bring attention to an underrated or forgotten artist. Denver was a superstar, selling millions of records, packing concert venues the world over and starring in hit movies. He was instantly recognizable, even when on humanitarian missions in the most remote places.
Denver would have been 70 years old this December. Producers of the tribute CD hope that the new versions of old favorites will please Denver’s loyal followers while winning his music new fans. Among the new versions on the release is Evan Dando of the Lemonheads singing "Looking for Space.”
Brandi Carlile, 32, grew up listening to Denver’s music and his writing inspired her own career as a singer-songwriter.
“I hope that people that love John Denver’s music will look at this album and its tribute as an honest to goodness inspired version of how we as singer-songwriters are influenced by John Denver’s music and by his lyrics and his life," she said. "I hope that they’ll see that none of us are trying to be John Denver, because that is a bar that no one will reach.”
Teaming up with Emmylou Harris, Brandi Carlile took on the daunting task of covering Denver’s iconic “Take Me Home, Country Roads” for “The Music Is You.” They’ve made it sound like their own song…that’s the mark of a good tribute.

John Denver, was an American singer, songwriter, activist, and humanitarian. After traveling and living in numerous locations while growing up in his military family, Denver began his music career in folk music groups in the late 1960s. His greatest commercial success was as a solo singer, starting in the 1970s. I have read the news about John Denver Tribute Links Musicians from Various Genres, Generations.

Listening Skill

Outside the classroom, June 27, 2013

Listening is one of the most important skills. How well you listen has a major impact on your job effectiveness, and on the quality of your relationships with others. I started listening to my favorite songs. Then listen to the YouTube website and interpretation of what was heard. I listen to obtain information, listen to understand, listen for enjoyment and listen to learn. Today I listen to VOA Learning English from YouTube.

The VOA above, this is the economics report in special English. Napoleon Hill believed that if you think the right thoughts you can. In 1937, he published the book "Think and Grow Rich." Napoleon Hill spent many years researching financial success and observing people who had become rich. Although it was published in the middle of The Great Depression, it was an immediate success. "Think and Grow Rich" remains one of the most-popular non-fiction books ever written. Forbes magazine says it has sold 70 million copies since it first appeared, and continues to sell today. Napoleon Hill wrote at least ten other books about success before his death in 1970. None of Hill's books came close to selling as many copies as "Think and Grow Rich." But for today's generation, "Think and Grow Rich" is now available in a different form. Smarter Comics has released an illustrated version of the book. He says the book taught him to change the way he thinks about money and success.

After listening, I think if we read the book. I can have more information and knowledge for you. When I read many book that mean you have more information. You should start from read favorite book. What do you think about them?

Malaysia Declares State of Emergency in Haze Areas

Malaysia has declared a state of emergency in two parts of the southern state of Johor, as smoke from land-clearing fires in Indonesia pushed air pollution above safe levels.
Malaysian Natural Resources and Environment Minister G. Palnival said Sunday that the edict was made after pollution levels in Malaysia reached their highest levels in 16 years. Air quality in neighboring Singapore improved Sunday after reaching record pollution levels Friday for a third straight day. Indonesia has deployed helicopters to help battle raging fires and to seed clouds in a desperate attempt to create rain to douse the flames.
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Thursday the haze that began afflicting the city-state Monday could persist until the end of the dry season on Indonesia's Sumatra Island in September or October. Singapore's National Environment Agency chief Andrew Tan has called on Indonesia to take "decisive action" against companies suspected of burning forests on Sumatra as a cheap way of clearing land.
However, Indonesian Minister for People's Welfare Agung Laksono criticized Singapore's reaction to the haze, accusing the city-state of acting like a "child." Indonesia has defended its response, saying it is investigating companies suspected of setting the fires and trying to educate plantation owners about alternatives to traditional burning methods.

Today I listen to present about “Teaching Method. There are five group presented today; Vocabulary teaching, Pronunciation teaching, Culture teaching and Teaching English using ICT. I have knowledge about teaching method more over.
First, Vocabulary teaching that is learning new words is an important part of learning of new language. Therefore vocabulary teaching may extend beyond the teacher of individual words. There are many ways of teaching new words and phrases and teacher need to learn a variety of technique. For example about classroom; the teacher show the class picture of different types of transport, the teacher uses the words in the context and the learner try to work out meaning, etc. The new words will actually help the student to communicate. Second, Pronunciation teaching that idea is “speaking like a native speaker”. There are techniques and activity such as drilling, chaining, etc. Teacher of pronunciation need a good grounding in theoretical knowledge, practical classroom skills and access to good ideas for classroom activities. Teaching step such as warmer, listen, focus and pronunciation practice. Third, Communicative language teaching <CLT> is an approach to language teaching that emphasizes interaction as both the means and the ultimate goal of study. There are 3Ps about teaching steps; presentation, practice and production. CLT should be fun for both teacher and student.
Last, the teacher assignment about course English for Thais. Today I have more knowledge about teaching method. I can use all information in the teaching. I think every method have important for teaching. When I write lesson plan I can using all method in teaching. I will improve knowledge and my skills in the future.

“Just shoot for the stars

 If it feels right

 And aim for my heart

 If you feel like

Can take me away and make it OK

Malaria Risk Spikes for World's Poorest Children

LONDON —  The poorest children in the world's most impoverished communities are twice as likely to contract malaria as the least poor, according to a new study published in the Lancet medical journal Wednesday. Researchers say the study, led by Britain’s Durham University and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, suggests that alleviating poverty could protect children from malaria. Durham University Professor Steve Lindsay, who led the research, says the study highlights a possible new approach to tackling the often fatal mosquito-borne disease. “What is novel about this is thinking about malaria not just through getting bed nets out or better medicines," Lindsay said. "But we can actually improve or reduce malaria by assisting development in these communities.” Young girl with malaria rests in a clinic in South Sudanese state of Nothern Bahr el Ghazal.x Young girl with malaria rests in a clinic in South Sudanese state of Nothern Bahr el Ghazal.

The research published on Wednesday is based on an analysis of nearly 5,000 English-language studies published over the past three decades. Those studies were conducted in poor communities in Africa and Asia, focusing on children up to the age of 15. The youngsters were ranked by several factors including family assets, such as whether they have access to a bicycle or radio, levels of education, and skill sets. By linking levels of malaria to socio-economic status, the research finds that the poorest people are hit the hardest. As an example, Lindsay explains how inadequate housing impacts the spread of malaria. “80 percent of malaria transmission occurs indoors at night," he said. "So if you have a nice house where it is not so leaky, you have got screening on the doors, and you may have a ceiling, then you will get fewer mosquitos coming indoors.” Other development factors also play a role, like eating a nutritious diet or having an education, which helps people make informed decisions about malaria prevention, said Lindsay.
The study is an attempt to unite the scientific and development communities, so that the two can work together to tackle malaria. “We are being a wee bit provocative here with our hypothesis," said Lindsay. "First of all, scientists need to look at what are the mechanisms for where development, in its broad sense, is protective. And then look at ways of intervening -- better housing, better education, helping to improve the general welfare of communities and how that might impact and reduce malaria.” More than 2.5 billion people are at risk of malaria. The disease is endemic in more than 100 countries around the world.

I have read the news about malaria to the poor children living in the poorest communities in the world of London. I was feeling very dejected.  On our world there are many poor children, whether children or foreign children, Thailand.  In the News said. Malaria often happens with poor children. Which I can conclude that:
London's poor children live in poor communities. Moreover, they are faced with malaria. Malaria can be prevented if the community in which they lived solution. Durham University Professor Steve Lindsay, who led the research, says the study highlights a possible new approach to tackling the often fatal mosquito-borne disease. Learning Log, June 17, 2013

Inside the classroom, June 17, 2013

Today is the third week of learning on June 17, 2013 in classroom English subject. There is presentation of each group about “Teaching Method.” Beginning of class, a teacher tells about citing and referencing when we use information in book or website. We should citing or referencing. There are six teaching methods presented today; task based learning, project based learning, speaking, listening, reading and writing teaching.
The first teaching method presented is task based learning. Task based learning refers to an approach based on the use of tasks as the core unit of planning and instruction in language reaching. Some of its proponents present it as a logical development of Communicative Language Teaching since it draws on several principles that formed part of the communicative language teaching. Teacher Roles are selector and sequence of tasks, preparing learners for tasks and consciousness- rising.
The second teaching method is speaking, listening, reading and writing teaching. Many language learners regard speaking ability as the measure of knowing a language. These learners define fluency as the ability to converse with others much more than the ability to read, write, or comprehend oral language. We should teach speaking skill in the classroom because motivate and lose interest in learning. Listening teaching have process that:

1.     Pre- listening

2.     While- listening

3.     Post- listening

Above all, the teaching methods mostly are better for learning of the students. It is apply knowledge about task based learning, project based learning, speaking, listening, reading and writing teaching. Teacher give more information about task based learning that is each task will be organized in the following: pre- task activity an introduction to topic and task, task cycle task and language focus. I think every method have important for teaching. Do you agree with each teaching approach all above?
