Study: Light Color Affects Mood

Some colors humans are exposed to late at night could cause symptoms of clinical depression. That is the conclusion of a study that builds on previous findings that individuals exposed to dim levels of light overnight, such as from a glowing television set, can develop signs of clinical depression.  Investigators, curious as to whether the color of light contributed to depressive symptoms in humans, designed an experiment that exposed hamsters to different colors. They chose hamsters because they are nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the day and are active at night.
One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their nighttime period. Another group of rodents was exposed to blue light and a third group slept in the presence of white light. A fourth group of hamsters was exposed to glowing red light.
After four weeks, researchers noted how much sugary water the hamsters drank. The more depressed rodents consumed the least amount of water.
Randy Nelson, chair of Ohio State University’s Department of Neuroscience and co-author of the study, said animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed.
“What we saw is these animals didn’t show any sleep disruptions at all but they did have mucked up circadian clock genes and they did show depressive phenotypes whereas if they were in the dim red light, they did not,” Nelson said.
Nelson explained that photosensitive cells in the retina, which don’t have much to do with vision, detect light and transmit signals to the master circadian clock in the brain that controls the natural sleep-wake cycle.
Nelson said there’s a lot of blue in white light, which explains why blue light and white light hamsters seemed more depressed than rodents exposed to red light or darkness.
Nelson had suggestions for so-called "night owls" or people who work the night shift.
“My recommendation is if you are just living a typical mostly active [life] during the day, mostly inactive at night, you want to limit exposure to TVs which are quite bluish in the light they give off and computer screens and things like that," stated Nelson. "You can get filtered glass, you can get filters on your computer screen and filters on your eReaders to put it more in the reddish light.”

Everyone likes songs "Probably the most important thing about choosing a song to do with a class is to make sure that the lyrics are clear.

Teachers can use this song to convey the message to their students that they should have their own dream for the future. Aurelio's story was no surprise to another commenter, Katie Kivenko. She especially likes songs by Michael Jackson and Queen. She wrote: When you listen to your favorite songs, you feel emotionally high and it moves you to action.

I thing songs that work best are almost invariably those that produce some sort of response to the music. There is the question of whether or not your class likes the song. But you really want something a bit more than just that.

Muslims Celebrate Eid al-Fitr

Muslims in much of the world are celebrating Eid al-Fitr, the feast that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
Worshippers gathered in mosques in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, to begin the celebrations Thursday.
Celebrations are going on in much of Asia and the Middle East, including in Saudi Arabia, home to Islam's holiest sites.
Crowds of worshippers prayed and celebrated in Cairo's Tahrir Square, while Egypt's interim leaders attended prayers at a mosque in the capital.
U.S. President Barack Obama wished Muslims a "blessed and joyful celebration," citing the traditions of Ramadan as ones that serve as a reminder to be grateful and compassionate.
In Pakistan, however, preparations for the feast were marred by violence, with a bombing at the funeral of a murdered police officer, killing more than 30 people and injuring at least 60.
Eid al-Fitr celebrates the purification achieved during Ramadan - a month of sunrise-to-sunset fasting, one of the five pillars of Islam.
Eid is the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal and a major holiday. Because most significant Islamic events depend on a lunar sighting, the holiday's timing can vary in different countries. In Oman, officials said the Shawwal moon, which marks the start of Eid al-Fitr, had not been seen, so the feast would begin on Friday. And many Muslims in the United States will begin celebrations after sundown Thursday.

Muslims Celebrate Eid al-Fitr

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Every day during this month, Muslims around the world spend the daylight hours in a complete fast. I read news about Muslims Celebrate Eid al-Fitr.

The Last, the blessed month of Ramadan, Muslims all over the world abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs during the daylight hours. As a time to purify the soul, refocus attention on God, and practice self-sacrifice, Ramadan is much more than just not eating and drinking. I thing it’s very miraculous and excited for Muslims.

Cambodia Opposition Calls Troop Deployment ‘Intimidation’

PHNOM PENH — Cambodia’s opposition says the government’s decision to deploy soldiers to the capital Phnom Penh is a clear case of intimidation. The move comes more than a week after the July 28 general election - which both the ruling party and the opposition claim to have won.
The Cambodian government has deployed troops to Phnom Penh, claiming they are needed in order to deal with any violence in the event of opposition protests over the election result.
Local media reported that security forces, numbering in the hundreds, were ordered to the capital late Thursday. However the government would not comment on numbers.
Yim Sovann, a spokesman for the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party, or CNRP, condemned the decision to send troops. “This is a threat and intimidation to the people that is illegal,” he said.
The government’s decision follows nearly two weeks of disagreement between the ruling Cambodian People's Party and the opposition over a commission to investigate alleged electoral irregularities. Yim Sovann insisted the opposition did not want violence, and said peaceful protest was the last resort should agreement on the commission not be reached.
“We, the CNRP, are looking for a peaceful solution to the problem - especially our stance to form a special commission to do the investigation and to solve the problem peacefully,” he said.
Cambodian security forces have a long history of partiality towards Prime Minister Hun Sen’s ruling CPP. But government spokesman Phay Siphan said Friday that people had nothing to fear. The deployment, he said, came about partly in response to the opposition’s anti-Vietnamese comments, which he said could lead to violence.

During campaigning the opposition was criticized by rights groups and others for employing anti-Vietnamese rhetoric in a bid to appeal to those Cambodians mistrustful of their more powerful neighbour. “The government has an obligation to make law and order in the city as well on the streets as well as respect the ordinary people, the way of their life. That’s our job, but we wish that all political parties will take care of their business peacefully in the office as well as in the National Assembly rather than urge innocent people onto the street - it doesn’t help,” said the spokesman. Phay Siphan said security forces would remain in place in the capital until the results of the election were officially confirmed next month. Both parties claim that they won the July 28 ballot, in which the opposition stunned the ruling party with a strong showing.
The CNRP has since insisted on an independent commission to investigate what it claims was widespread electoral fraud, and says the National Election Committee, which has responsibility for managing the vote, cannot be trusted to act independently of the ruling party.
Opposition leader Sam Rainsy, who is currently in the United States, has asked the United Nations to get involved in the investigation.

Listening is one of the most important skills you can have. I listening about VOA Learning English, this is the Education Report in Special English.
A Vietnamese man hopes to raise the quality of education in his country by building "parent libraries" in rural schools. Nguyen Quang Thach provides libraries to the schools so books are more available in farming communities. He works with publishers in Hanoi to get the books at reduced rates for teachers and their students.  More than 90 percent of Vietnam's population can read and write. But academic performance in the schools remains low compared to other Southeast Asian nations. Corruption is a big part of the problem. Vietnamese media often report stories of teachers giving high grades in exchange for money.
listening is a skill that we can all benefit from improving. By becoming a better listener, you will improve your productivity, as well as your ability to influence, persuade and negotiate. What's more, you'll avoid conflict and misunderstandings. All of these are necessary for workplace success!
