Too Much Trash

What Causes It

We make way too much garbage! All that garbage started as things that were made, grown, or harvested from the Earth for us to buy, eat or use. The trouble is, the amount of things we buy and dispose of is becoming a problem. We are running out of resources to make all the things we need and running out of space to throw out all that garbage.
Researchers have found that Americans each make about 4.5 pounds of garbage every day. The United States makes more garbage than any other country on the planet. We have 5% of the people on Earth, but make almost 1/3 of all the world’s garbage! So as landfills keep filling up, people will have to find more places for all that trash.

How Does It Affect Us

Too much trash has always been a problem for communities of people.
Early American settlers dealt with their garbage by dumping it over their back fence, in the river or burying it in their yard. They often burned garbage too. As communities grew into towns, they made town dumps. Now we call garbage dumps – “landfills.”
Even earlier in history -- in the years 1347-1351 the bubonic plague, also called the “black death,” spread through Europe, Asia and Africa killing 75 million people. What they didn’t know at the time was that it was all caused by too much garbage in the streets! Piles of garbage attracted rats, which had fleas, which carried the disease. The rats carried it from place to place. The lack of sanitation made the spread of the epidemic the worst in human history. At the end, half the population in the places struck, were dead -- all because of too much trash!
Many early landfills were made in wetlands, which were thought to be wasteland back then. Early landfills leaked into rivers and lakes and built up gases, like methane. Garbage dumps used to catch fire and even explode, because as garbage rots, it gives off methane, a flammable gas. The first garbage burning plant, called an “incinerator,” in the United States was built on Governor's Island in NY in 1885. By 1914, there were 300 incinerators burning garbage in the U.S.
What Can You Do to Help

The good news is that we can make changes that will help both using up our resources and filling up our landfills. You can keep a list of the things you do to help out and add to it over time.

Conserve. To slow the use of our planet’s resources, we can use less of them. There are many things you can do in your every day life to save or “conserve.” Here are a few suggestions:

Recycle! Call your local recycling, solid waste or public works departments to find out what they will take back from your household. Your state’s environmental agency can help you too. For big items, like an old washing machine, call the store where you bought it for information about how to recycle it.

For small household things, make recycling boxes for paper, magazines, newspaper, cardboard, cans, and bottles. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported in 2005 that Americans who recycled and composted, stopped 64 million tons of stuff from going to landfills or being burned. That equals 174 billion pounds of trash in one year alone!

Help out by returning bottles that have deposits for your parents. That takes time. If you don’t have time, bag them all up and bring them to the local Boy Scout or school bottle drive bins.

Buy Recycled Products. Recycling works in a loop, but only if all parts of the loop are going. The first part of the loop is when people, like you, recycle. The next part is when the recycled things get collected, cleaned and sold to factories that can re-use them. Then the recyclables are made into new products like newspapers, carpets and plastic tubs. Then people, like you, buy them again. That is the recycling loop. Whenever you buy a recycled product you are helping close the recycling loop.

Keep adding to your list over time. Recycling and saving gets addictive!

A quick list to make less trash and use fewer new resources, like trees, water and oil:

·         Recycle and buy recycled products.

·         Send e-cards instead of paper cards.

·         Use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins.

·         Use Tupperware instead of plastic bags.

·         Look for products that have less packaging.

·         Use rechargeable batteries.

·         Use a lunch box instead of paper or plastic sacks.

Today, I read about Cremations Harm India’s Environment. Cremations in India have started taking its toll on the country’s natural resources.
With a population of over 1 billion, trees are cut down at an alarming rate to support the demand for wood in cremation ceremonies. Traditions of taking the ashes of loved ones to the various holy rivers are creating pollution for water sources as well. And this Hindu custom that has been passed down for hundreds of years is resistant to change in this area.
When the cremation is over, the families gather the remains in a pot and take them to one of the rivers identified as “holy” in Hinduism. They then release the ashes into the water. If a holy stream cannot be accessed, then a river leading to the ocean will work also.

Inside The Classroom, October 8, 2013

In the morning, I listen and watch the teaching of friends. It is useful for my teaching because I can apply the strength and weakness of friends to match their own. What I have learned from the presentation.
Wannisa teach by using game for warm up her students. It is a good idea because to encourage students with an interest in teaching. She has conversation scrip for students. Moreover she has check list in lesson plan. She has a good classroom management and solving immediate problems.
The last, my teacher gives guidance about teaching of my friends. We can fix the error of students that are students to resolve themselves, a friend help solve the problem for and teacher solves the student. I will apply guidance for my teaching.

In the morning, I will present about teaching. Today is very excited but I think that well trained. Before I exam teaching my friend was before everyone received both criticism. Pressure began again fear myself will fail.
After I present about teaching, I received advice from teachers about lesson plan. Lesson plan is important for teacher because is tool to teach that allows teachers to meet the learning objectives. I must adjust on the part of enabling objective, grammar skill, rubric, and the other.
The last, I thing about my teaching make the students interested in teaching because it is motivate the students to learn variety of teaching materials such as video, conversation, picture cards. I will improve is to write lesson plans to meet the objectives set to provide students with the most learning.

Listening Skill

Today, I listen about VOA Learning English from YouTube. I listening news about economic of China.
China's demand for food imports will sharply rise in the next 10 years. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development made the prediction. They say China will increase its imports of grains, oil seeds and meat. Angel Gurria is secretary-general of the OECD. He says China's need for food is growing at a time when world food production is decreasing. Imports to China are expected to grow at a yearly rate of three percent to 1.7 million tons by the year 2022. China's imports of crops used to feed animals, called coarse grains, are expected to double by 2022. And imports of oil seeds are predicted to rise 41 percent.
I think my listening skill improve after I more listen such as news, English song and the other. If I more listen I can have more knowledge. Moreover I can have good listening skill.

Bangkok braces for more rain

I read news about Rain will fall over most of the capital city for another day on Friday after causing flooding in some districts in the early hours of Thursday.
Most areas of the city will be wet on Friday with mild winds up to 30 kilometres per hour, the weather forecast bureau said. Heavy rains on Wednesday night flooded roads in several districts in the capital, with Chatuchak, Bang Bon, Klong Toey, Bang Na, Saphan Sung, Suan Luang, Lat Krabang and Prawet hard hit, according to Department of Drainage and Sewerage reports. Lat Krabang received 165.5 millimetres of rain, it added.
I think we should help the world such as plant trees, reduce garbage for my world.
